The suitability estimate is a transparent heuristic over those offshore-model inputs. It does not fabricate spot-specific conditions, breaking-wave height, or a local beach forecast.

Suitability method and limits

Suitability method version 1.0.

Raw score weights: wave height 60%, wind speed 25%, and wave period 15%. The displayed score is the nearest whole number from 0 to 5.

Model-fit labels use the rounded score: 0–1 Low model fit, 2–3 Mixed model fit, 4–5 Favorable model fit. These describe the offshore-model heuristic, not beach conditions or safety.

Preferred height ranges are 0.4–0.9 m for beginners, 0.8–1.8 m for intermediates, and 1.2–2.8 m for advanced surfers. Outer height ranges are 0.2–1.8 m, 0.3–3.0 m, and 0.4–4.5 m respectively.

Preferred period ranges are 6–9 s, 8–13 s, and 9–15 s. Period scores taper from zero at 3 s and return to zero at 14 s, 19 s, and 22 s respectively. Wind receives full credit through 5 kn and tapers to zero at 22 kn.

A score is capped at 1 when height is outside the skill's outer range, wind reaches 25 kn, or gusts reach 30 kn. A stale source produces a stale estimate. Missing required readings, unavailable sources, or data older than 24 hours produce no estimate.

The heuristic does not use wave or wind direction. It cannot assess breaking waves, bathymetry, tide, rips, shorebreak, water quality, crowds, access, equipment, or personal safety. Check local conditions and official warnings before entering the water.
